I know I’m a day or two late with this, but I’ve only just gotten the chance to watch the awards and holy shit did La La Land dominate. 7 nominations and 7 wins, I’d definitely call that domination. There are already plenty of articles about the Globes so I’m just going to mention a few things.
The awards were hosted by none other than talk show host, Jimmy Fallon. It’s no surprise that the opening was hilarious, full of cameos and a song that gets stuck in your head. It featured a rap from Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby a brown, a beautiful synchronised swim number from Barb, Ryan Reynolds lying on a piano and a dance number between Jimmy and Justin Timberlake.
Seeing as La La Land dominated, both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone won separate awards and got the chance to make a speech. Gosling accepted his award and dedicated it to his family where Stone shared her award with creators and dreamers who have ever been knocked down but continued forward. They two of them had excellent acceptance speeches and are amazing enough to be watched over and over again.
The biggest award of the night, the lifetime achievement award, went to Meryl Street and she certainly had a speech to accompany it. She made an excellent point that Hollywood is full of actors and actresses from all over the world and (with a subtle nod towards a certain someone….) if they were to be sent out, who would be left? Streep truly deserved this award and did justice up on the stage.
Last to grace the stage was the cast and creators of the 2016 film, Moonlight. This won 5 Globes, best drama motion picture, best supporting actor, best cinematography, best director and best film. It was an all round good night for Moonlight at the Globes.
Throughout the night, a few films snagged several Globes and congratulations to all actors and actresses who won. I’m sure they all had an excellent time at the after party and let’s see what happens next year.
Let me know your thoughts on this year’s Golden Globes.
