How do you make an award show more exciting than it already is? You get a host that takes it to the next level.
This years MTV Movie and TV Awards were hosted my Adam DeVine (Pitch Perfect and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates) and he really got into the spirit. He gave us an incredible and hilarious MTV version of Disney’s, ‘Be Our Guest’ from Beauty and the Beast. Not only did he play the beast himself but Josh Gad played his own character from the film, LeFou. With cameos like Hailee Stienfeld as Belle and Rebel Wilson as Mrs. Potts.
As the Billions’ star Asia Kate Dillon stepped out onto the stage to present the award for Best Actor in a Movie, she says, “The only distinction we should be making when it comes to awards is between each outstanding performance,”. This year, MTV made the decision to consider BOTH men and women for this award, a simple yet radical move. This trophy was awarded to Emma Watson for her performance in Beauty and the Beast. When she stood up to the microphone for her acceptance speech, she spoke about the importance of breaking down such distinctions, “The first acting award in history that doesn’t separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience,” continuing on, “….Empathy and the ability to use your imagination should have no limits.”. Well done Watson, one of the best speeches of the night.
A couple more great speeches were from Taraji P. Henson and Hugh Jackman and Dafne Keen. Henson accepted the Best Fight Against the System award for her role in Hidden Figures. The best way to tell how great her speech was, is to read it.
“No one ever told me that girls couldn’t do math and science, but there was an understanding that it was for boys. I remember getting this script and being very upset, because I felt like a dream was stolen from me. It became my mission and everyone’s mission who was involved in this film to dispel that myth so that another young girl would not grow up thinking that her mind wasn’t capable of grasping math and science.”
The young star of Logan, Dafne Keen, took the stage with her co-star, Hugh Jackman to accepted the award for Best On-Screen Duo. Jackman begins to speak when Keen interrupts him, “I don’t speak for half of the movie and you get to say the thank you’s?”. She continues to poke fun at her co-star, “You didn’t thank your parent’s?” as she proceeds to thank them on his behalf. She reads a few more names when, “This is boring!” she exclaims and Jackman finishes the speech. Now we know why they have such a good on-screen dynamic!
Here’s a few more from the night’s award acceptances.
Left (This is Us for Best Tearjerker), top right (Fast & Furious accepting the Generation Award) and bottom right (Ashton Sander and Jharrel Jerome from Moonlight awarded best kiss).
But of course I couldn’t miss out the part of the night that got one of Netflix’s most popular shows presenting an award to another of Netflix’s most popular shows! The cast of 13 Reasons Why presents the MTV award for Show of the Year to the cast of Stranger Things.
